About the artwork

In this work, two verses by Hafez of Shiraz are written in the form of a chalipa. The balanced structure of the chalipa allows text and form to appear together, while the movement of the letters creates a rhythm in keeping with the mood of the poem.

The hallkari illumination of the work, executed by Atefeh Davarpanah, is placed delicately in the margin and surrounding space. Alongside the calligraphy, it creates a composition that brings together script and the traditional ornamental arts of Iran.

Text / Poem in the Artwork:

“I have fallen into the sea like a fish,
waiting for the beloved to catch me on the hook.

At his feet I have fallen in supplication—
might there be a time when he takes my hand?”
