Within the Soul

A
ArtistAli Bagheri

iranian

Inspired by a ghazal by Saadi, this work brings the free movement of the pen into dialogue with the quiet, contemplative presence of the words. The contrast between black ink and colored illumination creates a subtle encounter between the visual heritage of Persian calligraphy and a personal experience of the poem.

About the artwork

For this work, I chose a passage from Saadi whose meaning, for me, carries a deep sense of presence and an emphasis on the idea of the “soul.” I wanted the movement of the pen to do more than shape the words, allowing it to create moments of pause, reflection, and inward searching across the composition.

The broad, fluid forms of the letters find balance beside the illuminated elements, creating a tension between movement and stillness. Writing this piece became a way of approaching the poem through form, where each gesture of the pen could reveal something of the words’ hidden feeling and rhythm.
