My fascination with Master Fallah’s work led me to spend a period studying many of his pieces closely and practicing some of them in their entirety. I tried to approach the structure, proportions, and movement of the pen as faithfully as I could, not with the idea of attaining the quality of his calligraphy, but to understand what cannot be learned through looking alone.
In “Practice,” repetition became another form of study. Each rewriting revealed details I had previously missed and made clearer the distance between seeing a work and understanding how it comes into being. I regard this page as part of my own process of learning, a trace of encountering the work of an artist whose calligraphy has had a profound influence on my experience.
